JEFFERSON COUNTY - From Jefferson County District Attorney's Office - Richard Pleasant, 18, of Port Arthur, was sentenced to a term of ten years in the state penitentiary in connection with a 2011 robbery at Memorial Stadium in Port Arthur.
On October 21, 2011, a Port Arthur man was walking to his car after the varsity football game between Memorial and West Brook had ended. As he was walking through the parking lot he was hit in the back of the head and was knocked to the ground, where he was punched and kicked by Pleasant and about 7 other male attackers. Pleasant robbed the victim of his cell phone during the attack, while another suspect took the victim's wallet. Several witnesses, including an off duty Port Arthur police officer, saw the attack and were able to identify Pleasant as one of the actors.
Pleasant later gave a statement to police and admitted to the robbery, telling detectives the cell phone for about $30.00. The victim was shaken by the attack, and was trying to protect himself from opening a wound from a recent surgery.
Pleasant, who had no significant prior adult criminal history, pled guilty to robbery under an agreement that limited his punishment to ten (10) out of twenty (20) possible years. The defense argued for probation, while prosecutors argued for penitentiary time.
In assessing the maximum possible sentence, Judge John Stevens called the robbery a "brutal and vicious ambush". Prosecutor Pat Knauth agreed. "A simple innocent Friday night at the game became a nightmare. We should be able to go to our kids' games and not fear an attack like this".
