BEAUMONT - Beaumont Police are investigating a shooting in which a 70-year-old woman who came to an apartment to pick up shrimp became involved in an argument with a 23-year-old visitor and is accused of firing several shots.
The younger woman was struck in the arm and one bullet hit the older woman in her hand.
The shooting was reported at about 2 p.m. Wednesday at Starcrest Apartments, 3255 Elmira.
Witnesses told officers a 70-year-old woman came to the apartment to pick up shrimp. A 23-year-old woman was visiting the apartment and an argument broke out between the two. Police say at some point during the argument the 70-year-old walked out to her vehicle and retrieved a handgun. She then went back into the apartment and a struggle broke out between the two. According to investigators, during that struggle the 70-year-old fired several shots from the handgun. One of the shots struck the 23-year-old in her right arm and a second shot struck the 70-year-old in her right hand. Neither injury was life threatening.
Friends of the 23-year-old had transported her to Baptist ER prior to the arrival of Beaumon police. The 70-year-old was still at the scene when officers got there. Beaumont EMS transported her to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth for treatment of her injury.
Patrol officers secured the scene, I.D. technicians processed the scene for forensic evidence and detectives interviewed witnesses. Formal charges of Aggravated Assault may be filed against the 70-year-old once the victim gives a formal statement.
