JEFFERSON COUNTY - by Scott Lawrence - Jefferson County Commissioners Court is scheduled to discuss the possible creation of a County Elections Administrator Position during a workshop Monday.
In the past, County Clerk Carolyn Guidry has asked commissioners to create such a position but they've declined.
Guidry told KFDM News she's asked for the workshop because she believes the creation of an elections administrator is workable.
"I'm no longer able to contract with political parties," Guidry told KFDM News. "The elections are overwhelming for my office. I think it's best for a county our size. We'll show them the advantages. I put together a budget to show them it's feasible."
Guidry told KFDM she'll handle elections through November but hopes the county can create the position for next year.
County Judge Jeff Branick is cautious about the idea.
"I'm not going to approve any increase in our budget," Branick told KFDM News by telephone Thursday. "If we can have an interlocal agreement with other cities to help pick up the increase in costs, then maybe, but not if the county has to do it alone. Carolyn has done research and we'll listen to her. I want to see what other counties spend."
