JEFFERSON COUNTY - A grand jury has indicted a man for capital murder in a rural Jefferson County killing.
The grand jury indicted Melvin Spikes III, 38, for the capital murder of Emerson Franklin, 76.
Deputies discovered Franklin's body June 17 at his home in the 1200 block of Hildebrandt in the Cardinal Meadows subdivision.
Franklin was a deacon at New Pilgrim Baptist Church. When he didn't show up for church services, some members visited his home and found the door kicked in. When officers arrived they found Franklin's body in his bathtub. Officers say there were signs of a struggle.
Deputies arrested Spikes on July 18.
