BEAUMONT/ORANGE COUNTY - by Megan Dillard - The family of a former Marine says it's looking to God for relief and to the Texas Department of Public Safety for answers.
38-year-old Timothy Owens died in a head-on collision early Friday morning on Highway 62. According to his family, the former Marine sergeant was traveling to work when he was struck.
The department of Public Safety says Owens was on the northbound side of Highway 62 when Robert Manning of Orange crossed over from the southbound lanes and his truck hit Owens' car head-on at about 5 a.m. Manning is in critical condition.
State troopers took a blood sample from Manning, which is standard procedure in a fatal accident.
Investigators are trying to determine why he crossed the center line and crashed into Owens' car.
It could take four to six months to learn more about what happened on the stretch of highway in Orange County.
The mother and sister of the former Marine say even outside of the military he lived a life of service.
"I'm standing on my faith that God will help me get through this to understand that it was his call," Shirley Owens, Timothy Owens mother, told KFDM News.
Shirley Owens and her family have lost the person they turned to for everything.
Timothy Owens' mother received the news when a trooper knocked at her door early Friday morning.
"They told us that he didn't feel anything. It was instant. I thank God for that."
Owens says her son was a good person with a heart of gold.
She proudly showed us a folder of papers and certificates celebrating his accomplishments as a Marine.
"Timothy was a good, good child. I didn't have to worry about him at all. He's never been in trouble with the law when he was coming up, he never."
Timothy Owens' sister, Tacoma Bushnell, shared fond memories of her brother.
"I like his little surprise visits," said Bushnell. "His little sick sense of humor, I call it. He'll sneak up on you, open the door with the key, then say 'whatcha doing, whatcha doing?'"
Bushnell says her younger brother was a helper.
"He was a hard worker. He was a good brother. He was a great son to my mom. He helped her a lot.
A mother who now has to lean on her faith to ease the pain.
"It's these times you have to stand on God's words and know that everything's going to be alright, and I know he's in a better place now."
From a well-behaved child to a polished Marine, a son this proud mother calls one of a kind.
"He was just, good. My baby."
Timothy Owens graduated from Beaumont's Central High School in 1992.
His family told KFDM he also worked at a drug rehabilitation center and an orphanage.
Owens' mother is asking for prayers for their family and Robert Manning.
