JEFFERSON COUNTY - by Scott Lawrence - Mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile Virus for the fourth time this year in Jefferson County.
Kevin Sexton, Director of the Jefferson County Mosquito Control District, told KFDM News the batch of 46 mosquitoes was collected August 7 at Taft and Willow in Groves. His office just learned the mosquito batch tested positive for West Nile.
Other samples that have tested positive for West Nile were collected at Grannis and 5th in Port Arthur, El Paso and 19th in Port Arthur, and Park and Saxe in Beaumont.
Another sample taken in Orange County has also tested positive for West Nile.
There are no confirmed human cases of the virus in Jefferson, Orange or Hardin County.
There have been a number of human cases in other parts of Texas, primarily North Texas. Several people have died. One man in the Houston area recently died of complications from West Nile.
Sexton says Southeast Texans shouldn't be alarmed by the virus but should take common-sense precautions. The mosquitoes that carry West Nile are active at night. He says the county is doing everything it can, including aerial and ground spraying, to attack the mosquitoes.
