ROSENBERG, Texas - From KHOU-TV and www.khou.com - A teenager going for a dip in a Fort Bend County retention pond drowned after swimming too close to a powerful fountain Sunday, according to Rosenberg police.
It happened around 8:30 p.m. in the Summer Lakes subdivision near FM 762 and FM 2977.
Police said the teen boy and some friends left a nearby birthday party and decided to get in the water, despite warning signs.
The teen went underwater near a large fountain and never resurfaced.
Neighbors called 911, but it took rescuers more than an hour to find his body.
“From what we understand, what we can speculate, is he was so close to the fountain that the pump from the fountain grabbed a hold of him and didn’t let him go,” said Lt. Aaron Slater.
Neighbors told KHOU 11 News the teen and his family just moved to the area a month ago.
