BEAUMONT - Judge Layne Walker has sentenced a teenager to 30 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to attempted capital murder in the shooting of a deputy.
He'll won't become eligible for parole until he serves at least half of his sentence.
KFDM reporter Kalie Desimone was in court for the sentencing. She'll have more tonight at 6.
Dillon Schlegel, 17, appeared in court today for sentencing on a charge of attempted capital murder in the January 26 shooting of Orange County Deputy Fred Ashworth. Schlegel could have received up to a life sentence.
Earlier this year Schlegel was certified to stand trial as an adult.
Ashworth had transported Schelegel back to the Minnie Rogers Juvenile Justice Center following a hearing in Orange County. Ashworth was shot twice, once in the upper left chest and once in the back, while his car was parked in the sally port and he was preparing to escort Schlegel into the center. Investigators say Schlegel was shackled in the back seat but somehow managed to remove his hands from the cuffs and get Ashworth's gun, which was sitting in the front of his patrol unit. Investigators believe the teen might have reached through the window that separated him from the front of the patrol car.
Ashworth returned to work after he spent weeks recovering from the shooting.
