We want to remind citizens of the following common sense tips to remember to help keep our children safe:
1. Be mindful of school safety zones. Observe the lowered speed limits during drop off and pick up hours. Remember that is a violation of law to use a cell phone in school safety zones during the hours of morning drop off and afternoon pickup. Officers will maintain increased visibility in these zones to monitor traffic flow and insure protection of the students.
2. Be mindful of school crosswalks. Tell your children to cross at monitored crossing sites where available. If crossing sights are not available, tell your children to cross only at intersections. Crossing guards will be monitoring selected crosswalks in proximity to schools.
3. Be mindful of school buses stopped for loading or unloading of children. Remember that it is a violation of law to pass a school bus while it is stopped for loading or unloading. Watch for children darting into traffic unexpectedly from buses. Parents, make sure your child knows and verifies the right bus number they ride before boarding.
4. Be mindful of children walking or riding bikes near or on roadways. Remember that children may not pay close attention to vehicle traffic as they walk or ride bikes. Watch for children who may enter the roadway suddenly. Parents, it is a good idea to walk the route with your child prior to school starting to make sure they are familiar with it.
Motorists are urged to stay focused while driving, stay watchful for children who may be in the roadways, and stay patient during the morning and afternoon commutes.
