BEAUMONT - Testimony is underway in trial of a man charged with capital murder in the death of young store clerk.
20-year-old Minh-Dang Nguyen was shot and killed at the convenience store where she worked.
Nguyen was behind the counter at Van's Grocery on Avenue A in Beaumont during the evening of August 1, 2010.
Nguyen had been attending Lamar University and was studying to become a nurse.
Three other men have been indicted on capital murder charges in connection with the killing.
18-year-old Labyron Warren is the first suspect to stand trial. Prosecutors say he fired the shots. Warren was 16 at the time of the killing. If convicted by a jury in Judge John Stevens' court, Warren would receive an automatic life sentence. Prosecutors called several witnesses Tuesday, including the store owner, a man stocking beer, and three customers who were all inside the store at the time of the killing.
A witness testified he heard one of the men use an obscenity and demand that Nguyen turn over the money. The owner said the attackers got about $200.
The witness also testified he heard Nguyen say to one of the attackers, "I know you."
Prosecutors submitted several key pieces of evidence including dozens of photos highlighting the crime scene.
Detectives were also able to recover a bubble gum bucket from a shed near a suspect's home.
Inside the bucket were pieces of mail addressed to Van's Grocery.
Testimony will resume Wednesday morning.
