HOUSTON (AP) - Houston police officers shot and wounded a man they thought had a gun after he refused to show his hands, then made a quick movement and pulled out an object that turned out to be a cellphone.
Houston police spokesman John Cannon tells the Houston Chronicle the man was taken to the hospital after the Sunday night shooting outside an apartment complex. The man, wounded in the lower leg, is expected to survive.
Cannon says the officers were responding to a call about a suspicious man with a gun.
Refusing commands to show and raise his hands, the man reached into his pants. He then pulled out the object that turned out to be a phone.
Cannon says that the officers feared he had a gun and opened fire.
