BEAUMONT - Organizers of a religious rally in downtown Beaumont hope what began with cheerleaders in Kountze, fighting for the right to hold up run-through banners with religious messages at football games, spreads to cause a 'great awakening' across the nation.
The Wide Awake Rally on Wednesday night drew hundreds to the great lawn of the Beaumont Event Centre.
Christian band Over Everest and religious speaker Kacy Benson were behind the event.
Organizers wanted to take advantage of the publicity the Kountze cheerleaders have received after the district banned the use of run-through signs with scriptures on them at football games.
A judge issued a temporary restraining order last week, allowing the cheerleaders to continue displaying the signs.
He scheduled another hearing for next week.
Wednesday night's rally was the first of several organizers have planned.
