BEAUMONT - A Beaumont Police Department officer received non-life threatening injuries when he was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 10 near downtown while cleaning tires that had spilled from a truck.
Ronnie Patton, 28, was taken to Baptist Beaumont Hospital. Police say the tires spilled from an 18 wheeler traveling west on I-10 near Gulf Street. The rear doors came open and large tires fell out. Patton, who has served 3 1/2 years in the Beaumont Police Department, responded with another officer to remove the tires.
According to investigators, a Mazda driven by a 53 year old woman was struck from behind by a 39 year old man driving a Toyota Tundra. The Mazda was pushed into Patton and a patrol unit. He noticed the vehicle just before impact and tried to jump toward the median. Patton was struck and thrown into the air, over the median and into the eastbound lane of traffic. He was conscious at the scene and taken to Baptist Beaumont Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Mazda, a 7-year-old passenger from the Mazda, and the truck driver, were treated at the scene. The driver of the 18 wheeler returned to the scene to pick up his tires and speak with officers.
They continue taking statements and investigating the crash.
