BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
Jasper County and the city of Jasper handed out warrants to forty suspected felony drug dealers. It’s part of Sheriff Mitchel Newman’s seventh warrant round-up.
The round-up included federal and local agents from multiple law enforcement agencies. In addition to the Jasper County Sherrif’s Office, agents with the Drug Enforcement Agency, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the U.S. Marshals all worked together to arrest the suspected drug dealers. The sheriff’s office first started making a case against the suspects in February.
They set up undercover drug operations to catch people they describe as some of the most well-known drug dealers in the county.
“It'll help on our burglaries, even our thefts, and our family assaults,” Sheriff Newman said. “Drugs lead to every problem that we have in our county. Most times it stems from some kind of drug problem.”
Many of the arrested suspects walked out of their homes proclaiming their innocence.
“I don't think we've arrested anybody yet that's said they've done it,” Sheriff Newman said after three arrests. “We've arrested all innocent people, but if you'll go watch the video and the audio you can watch them and hear them during the deal to sell dope, so we're ready to go to trial if they want to go to trial.”
Since Sheriff Newman started the felony drug warrant round-up in 2009, 350 people have been arrested.
