BEAUMONT - Should the Beaumont school board try to get some of the money the government seized as a result of the Calvin Walker case?
There is an item on the agenda for Thursday night's meeting calling for trustees to vote on the matter.
Walker, who is the district's electrical contractor, was accused of overbilling the district by millions.
Walker denied the allegations and his trial ended with a hung jury.
In July, Walker signed a plea agreement admitting to not filing his taxes in a timely manner when it came to money he was paid by BISD.
As part of the deal, Walker gave up $3 million he had been paid by the school district.
Trustee Mike Neil told KFDM Monday night "we know Walker overbilled us. It's our duty to the taxpayers to go after whatever money we can."
But school board president Woodrow Reece told KFDM that in September, BISD attorney Melody Chappell requested from the court that the district be reimbursed for attorneys fees and fees for documents the district provided to the government.
Reece said the public doesn't realize that action was taken.
Reece asked, "if Walker did something wrong, why wasn't he charged?"
So far, there hasn't been any word on whether the district will be getting any money back, but Neil says if the district can try to get money as a result of the BP explosion, trustees should be willing to try to get money back from the Walker case.
The issue is set to come up at this Thursday's meeting at the BISD administration building.
