The Beaumont average is $3.14, down 9 cents from last week. The price was $3.21 one year ago. The record high in Beaumont was $4 a gallon in July 2008.
The highest average in Texas is $3.38 in El Paso.
The Texas average is $3.23, down 7 cents. The national average is $3.46, down a nickel.
(Irving, TX) – From AAA Texas - The price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas fell seven cents over the last week to $3.23. Drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $3.38, and drivers in Beaumont are paying the least at $3.14. The statewide average is now 23 cents less than the national average of $3.46, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
Power outages and distribution issues in the wake of Hurricane Sandy led to some long lines at gas stations in New York and New Jersey over the last week. For motorists, those lines were an issue of electrical supply rather than a gasoline shortage. Without electricity fuel could not be delivered to gas stations and consumers. Once power is restored though, there is more than adequate gasoline supply ready to be delivered.
While gas prices in some storm affected areas have increased temporarily, ultimately the impact of Sandy will be on the decreased demand for gasoline and not the supply of gasoline. Sandy’s destruction on the demand for fuel added to the recent downward pressure on gas prices from already low demand, continued economic concerns, and the switch to less expensive, winter-blend gasoline. So, prices in areas not impacted by the storm have continued to fall.
“The recent drop in prices at the pumps will be a real benefit to Texans who are planning upcoming holiday road trips,” said AAA Texas/New Mexico Representative Doug Shupe. “The weather is cooling down around the state and people are looking forward to traveling to spend these fall weekends with friends and family.”
