PASADENA, Texas - The site brought the neighborhood to a stop, as an unresponsive 2-year-old was seen on a sidewalk wearing nothing more than a diaper on Saturday.
As the adult who was supposed to be watching him stood nearby, the community watched in horror.
“It’s just not fair,” neighbor Jason Kent said. “That baby didn’t have a chance to grow up.”
Police performed CPR after they were notified of the situation by a caller. But there was little they could do.
An ambulance rushed the boy to Bayshore Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The toddler lived in an upstairs apartment at the Empire Village Complex in the 1100 block of Burke Road.
According to neighbors, he was the youngest of three. While his mother was at work, they say her boyfriend watched the kids.
What went wrong is still not clear.
“I’m stunned that it happened,” neighbor Tammy Rodriguez said. “This is a quiet neighborhood.”
Though one witness said the boy appeared to have bruises, police say they will need an autopsy to know for sure how he died.
No one has been arrested in connection to the death and no charges have been filed. Child Protective Services is investigating.
The boy’s two older siblings are staying with a relative.
