JASPER COUNTY - BY STEVE STEWART/KJAS:
Five days after an unthinkable tragedy struck the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; there was a miracle here in east Texas, at Woodville’s Wheat Elementary School.
1st grade student Andrew Johnson is being hailed as a hero by school officials and his family, after the 7-year-old saved the life of a classmate, using the Heimlich maneuver.
According to Wheat Elementary Principal Charles Lowery, it happened during the lunch period on Wednesday, when Christian Bean began choking on a carrot. According to Lowery, and school counselor Robbie Vinson, Andrew performed the life-saving technique on Christian, which popped the carrot out of his throat, and he began to breathe again.
Lowery and Vinson said that Christian was then checked out by the school nurse, and she determined that he was fine.
Andrew’s grandfather, Eddie Johnson, said the boy was taught the Heimlich maneuver over the summer by his wife, Janice.
Eddie said that when Andrew realized what was happening to Christian, he remembered what to do.
Eddie says that he wants to encourage more parents and grandparents to learn the Heimlich maneuver themselves, and then pass that knowledge onto their children and grandchildren.
The abdominal thrust, commonly known as the Heimlich maneuver, was developed by Dr. Henry Jay Heimlich in the early 1970’s. The procedure is now a staple item that is taught in CPR classes across the country.
