BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton:
Beaumont Police have released the name of a suspect who was shot by an officer after witnesses say the man threatened him with a shotgun Friday morning during a domestic disturbance call.
John Michael Bledsoe, 28, is in stable condition at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth with injuries police say aren't life threatening. Detectives filed Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant charges with the District Attorney's Office. Justice of the Peace Ray Chesson issued a warrant and set bond at $150,000. Correctional officers took custody of Bledsoe and they'll transport him to jail when he's released from the hospital.
The officer is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such a shooting.
Police say the officer was forced to shoot Bledsoe.
A recovered shotgun provides only a glimpse at what happened in the 32 hundred block of North 10th Street at about 6 a.m. Friday.
A bullet hole through the front door is another piece of evidence.
"About six o'clock this morning, I woke up to gunshot wounds, or gunshots going off in the neighborhood, and it actually sounded like it was right outside my window," said Walter Molenda, a neighbor.
Molenda liveds around the corner from the home where the sound of gunshots rang out.
"I've lived here since 2000 and I never had anything like that in this neighborhood," Molenda told KFDM News.
It began when a 22-year-old woman called 911 to report that she'd been assaulted. Officers spoke with the woman. They say the suspect, Bledsoe, had a shotgun.
"I never would have expected this, but that's what they always say, and you don't think about it til you're part of this," said Randy Nugent, the woman's father. "You never expect that person to do that. It's very true. You never know who, what or where."
Witnesses say the Bledsoe was raising the shotgun at one of the officers, who then fired at him,
Officers left the neighborhood after several hours, but they're working to uncover more answers about what happened inside the crime scene tape.
