JEFFERSON COUNTY-By: Leslie Rangel
Thursday, February 14th marked the first American Airlines flight from the Jack Brooks Regional Airport.
The new service will offer 4 departures and 4 arrivals to and from Dallas daily, except Saturdays.
There will be 180 connecting destinations beyond Dallas.
The airport buzz earlier Thursday morning showed Southeast Texans were excited.
Passengers checked in and went through security, a scene unfamiliar to the airport since last summer.
"I want to be on the first flight that's bringing added commerce back to the area," Bruce Oler told KFDM. His trip was to DFW Airport and back.
Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick was one of the passengers on the flight. He says the new airlines will open doors for economic development.
Flight 2543 was nearly full with 41 passengers on board a 50 passenger capacity flight.
The flight was sent off with a water cannon salute from local fire departments.
Passengers like Ann Rothkamm say they're excited for the convenience of the flights and the farewell to Houston Airport hassles.
The new airport Direct, Alex Rupp tells KFDM News the rates are competitive with Houston flights.
Rupp is asking all Southeast Texans to give the new airline a try.
