BEAUMONT - By Megan Dillard - Relatives of the victim tell KFDM News they believe his fiance was upset because she felt her Mother's Day gift wasn't good enough.
Beaumont police arrested 20-year-old Paige Parkerson shortly after midnight in the 2300 block of Pope Street.
She's accused of stabbing her fiance to death while their children slept, only a few feet away from the attack.
21-year-old Clifton Barkin died at the home.
Barkin's sister says the family can't believe the value of a gift could out-weigh the value of a life.
"My heart is, my heart is broken."
Leslie Barkin and her family are aching.
"My mama got a phone call, and all I heard my mama say was, 'What, he's dead, he's dead?' and I said, 'Who mama?'"
It was her brother, 21-year-old Clifton Barkin.
And the phone call was from the woman accused of killing him, his 20-year-old fiance, Paige Parkerson.
"I was back here in less than five minutes."
And when Leslie Barkin got there, she saw evidence of the crime that took her brother's life.
"She had her hair in her face and her shirt was just blood."
And the reason for the horrific scene, a Mother's Day killing that took the life of a brother, a son, a father.
"She got mad because he bought her just flowers and a card."
The couple's two-year-old and three-month-old sons were sleeping in their bedrooms, just feet away from the attack.
Barkin died at the home he shared with his fiance.
"I know he's in a better place but, it didn't have to happen this way."
On a day meant for honoring mothers..
"To say my brother died on Mother's Day, this is a Mother's Day I'll never forget."
A loss this family will relive every May.
The couple's sons are staying with their grandfather in Woodville.
Parkerson is behind bars at the Jefferson County jail.
Tuesday, a judge will read the murder charge against her and set bond.
