Names released of man and woman killed in boat collision

JASPER COUNTY - by Steve W Stewart/KJAS and Rayburn Broadcasting

Authorities have released the names of two people who died in a weekend boating accident in northwest Jasper County. Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Mike Smith has identified the couple as Arlon Wayde Chance, 52, and Charlotte Benton Bowden, 38, both of the Fred Community in Tyler County.

Judge Smith said an autopsy was performed on Sunday, but he does not expect to receive any results until at least Wednesday.

The incident occurred shortly after 3:00 on Saturday afternoon on the Angelina River, a few miles north of the Bevilport Community.

According to Jasper County Emergency Corps President Billy Williford, two boats collided nearly head-on, resulting in the deaths of Chance and Bowden, and injuring one man in the other boat. However, his name is not yet available.

The injured man reportedly suffered a broken leg, he was picked up by another boater and taken to the Highway 63 West boat ramp, and then transported to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital.

Game Wardens from Texas Parks & Wildlife are continuing to investigate the accident, and both watercraft have been impounded.
