Hurricane Season starts June 1

BEAUMONT- by Haley Bull

Hurricane season
officially starts today. After Hurricane Rita in 2005 and Hurricane Ike in
2008, Southeast Texas is no stranger to the devastation and destruction the
storms can cause. While forecasters predict a near normal to below normal season,
there are still ways you can prepare now to save yourself trouble later.

Workers M and D
Supply in Beaumont are stocking the shelves with hurricane-labeled items
customers can put in an emergency kit.

"It's better to
be prepared and that way if something does arise, they're ready to go and
they're not running in at the last minute," Rachel Diaz, the store's
general manager, said.

Diaz recommends having a generator, flashlights, batteries, first aid kit, bug spray, water and boards for windows.

"That's one
thing people should consider also. Having your lumber already cut to the size
of your windows, getting hurricane clips to install the lumber to cover your
windows," Diaz said.

While it's essential
to have an emergency kit prepared, it's not the only tip.

"If officials do
call for an evacuation it's very important to listen and to evacuate. The
biggest thing is leave early," Sarah Dupre with the Texas Department of
Transportation said.

The Department of
Public Safety has published routes to follow.

"These are the
safest routes to get you out safely and to get you going in the right
direction," Dupre said.

The government also provides additional tips.
