Parents address concerns with special ed program

BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

Communication, transparency and teacher training made up the majority of parent concern in regard to the Beaumont school district’s special education program.

Tuesday night, conservator to the district, Fred Shafer, held a meeting for parents to address those concerns.

“I feel we all got to say what we wanted to say. Mr. Shafer went from room to room and sat and listened,” said Felisha Davis. “We know what they're hearing. We know what's been said. We know what's in writing now, so the big thing is going to be, what happens now, if they actually listen to us.”

Shafer said the next step will be for Region 5 to compile the parents’ concerns into a report.

It will be combined with concerns from administrators, teachers, diagnosticians and others involved with the special education program.

“I just want people to know it's not going to sit in the special education department and gather dust,” said Fred Shafer. “It's going to be used as an action plan towards making improvements.”

He said he expects that report to take shape in the next few weeks, but the implementation process will take several years.

“We're going to look at developing a three, four, five-year plan. It's not something that you're going to turn around in one year. It's just not going to happen,” he said.

Once completed, Shafer says the new Director of Special Education will be able to use it to move the program forward.

“My hope is that the children's needs will be met in the special education program and the teachers will enjoy teaching the kids what they need to be taught,” said Ruby Douresseau. “That's my hope, that the kids will learn how to live in society as the teachers give the information to them.”Parents address concerns with special ed program
