Police say on Tuesday, June 24, at about 7:30 pm, patrol officers responded to the 3100 block of East Lucas at Galveston to a reported aggravated assault.  A woman called the 911 Communications Center and reported that a man had just shot at her.

Officers arrived and spoke with the woman. They say she told them a man had fired a shot at her as she was in front of a residence in the 3100 block of East Lucas.  The woman said the man shot at her from a house in the 4800 block of Galveston.  He fired the shot across East Lucas Street toward the woman. She wasn't hurt.

Officers tried to make contact with the man at which point they say he walked out of the house on Galveston with a rifle.  Officers ordered the man to drop the rifle.  The man refused to comply, according to investigators, and instead, raised the rifle toward an officer.  Police say the officer feared for his safety and the safety of citizens in the immediate area and was forced to use his weapon to fire at the man.  The shot struck the man in the chest and he immediately fell to the ground.  The officers approached the man, secured his weapon, and began to administer first aid as they called for EMS.

Beaumont EMS responded and transported the man to Christus Hospital Saint Elizabeth. He was listed in critical condition was taken into surgery. He died Tuesday night.

Officers on the scene weren't hurt.

The officers directly involved in the officer-involved shooting have been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure in such a case.

Detectives, Crime Scene Technicians, and officers from our Traffic Division responded to investigate, process, and document the scene.  Officers also called for Investigators from the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office to assist with the investigation.
