Diocese releases statement about Supreme Court's decision on whether employers are required to cover contraception

NEWS RELEASE:

Beaumont Bishop Curtis Guillory, S.V.D., welcomed today's Supreme Court's decision calling it a victory for religious freedom and justice.
The Court ruled June 30 that closely held companies may be exempt from a government requirement to include contraceptives and drugs considered to be abortifacients in employee health insurance coverage.

"This decision comes during our third annual 'Fortnight For Freedom' celebration. This is a time when Catholics across the United States celebrate and also reinforce our commitment to religious freedom.  In today's decision the Court recognized the rights of the families who own these businesses to practice their faith and enjoy the God-given gift of religious freedom without facing penalties from the government," said Bishop Guillory.

In today's decision the Court ruled that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) "preventive services" mandate violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) as applied to these employers in the suit to the extent that it would have forced them to provide insurance coverage for drugs and devices that violate their religious convictions on respect for human life.

"The Court made a narrow ruling and clearly did not decide on the impact to our charities, hospitals and schools, so many of which have challenged the government's requirement as a burden on the exercise of their religious freedom.  We will continue to pray - especially as we move toward Independence Day - that these ministries of service will prevail in their cases.  I am asking those of other faiths to join us as together we work for the upholding of religious freedom.
