Live Game Blog - Buna In State Semifinals

Buna lost its semifinal game against Corsicana Mildred 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, TX.

After trailing 4-0, Buna rallied to score five runs over the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and the go ahead run in the bottom of the 6th inning.

Mildred answered by scoring three runs in the top of the 7th inning to take the 7-5 lead.

The Cougars were a little impatient at the plate in the bottom half yet had a two out rally going when Justin Carrell fouled out to the right side to end the game.

Pitcher Brandon Hillin pitched 6.1 innings, giving up 9 hits, 7 runs, 3 Earned Runs (all in the 7th), 4 walks,  and recorded 3 strikeouts.

3:13PM - Carrell pops out in foul territory on the right side to end the game.

3:11PM - Kyle Clark drives a base hit into right field. Two men on. Two outs. Justin Carrell is up.

3:07PM - The first two runners were put out for Buna. Hope is still alive as Baxter reached safe at first after a routine ground ball ended up falling out of the first baseman's glove. Kyle Clark up.

3:04PM - In the bottom of the 7th, it's Hillin, Sheppard and Baxter, the heart of Buna's order, due up.

3:02PM - Clark gets out of the jam. Going to the bottom of the 7th inning Mildred leads 7-5.

2:59PM - Josh Clark in to pitch for Hillin. Brandon's final line reads like this... 6.1 IP, 9H, 7Runs, 3 Earned Runs (all in the 7th), 4BBs, 3K, one batter hit by pitch.

2:57PM - Two run double for Mildred plates the 6th and 7th runs of the game. They lead 7-5 with one out and one on.

RBI Single for Mildred. Game is now tied at 5-5. They still have runners on first and second with only one out.

2:55PM - Second batter of the inning walks. Third batter is then hit by a pitch. The tying run is on second base and the go ahead run sits at first base for Mildred.

2:53PM - Leadoff man for Mildred strikes out looking for the first out of the inning on a nasty breaking ball from Brandon Hillen.

2:50PM - Fly out to center ends the inning. We go to the top of the 7th inning. The heart of the line up will be due up for Mildred.

2:44PM - SACRIFICE FLY for Kyle Clark has given Buna a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the 6th inning. All five runs are unanswered for the Cougars.

As the inning continues, Baker hits a single to center field. There are two outs in the inning with one man on. The top of the lineup is now at the plate looking for some insurance before trying to clinch the final three out.

2:43PM - A leadoff triple for Justin Carrell . Buna has scored in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings and looking to make it four in a row with a lead here in the 6th. 

2:36PM -  Hillin walks a batter, two men were on. Next batter grounds out and causes a force at second base. Runners were left on the corners with two outs and Hillin steps up to pitch out of the inning, leaving two runners on base. Moving to the bottom of the sixth inning.

2:34PM - Hillin looking tired on the mound. Coach makes a visit. There's one runner on and one out in the top of the 6th inning.

2:31PM - To the top of the 6th, and the game is tied at 4-4; Momentum quickly shifted after the home run as the inning ends on two defensive gems by Mildred. Shortstop makes a diving stop for the putout, and the centerfielder makes a diving catch to end the inning.

2:25pm - Ryan Sheppard hits a SOLO HOMERUN about 385ft, the game is now tied at 4-4.

2:20 - For Mildred in the top of the fifth, no runs on 1 hit, 1 left on base. Bottom of the fifth, same score.

QUICK STAT - BUNA trailed 4-0 after the second inning; they've scored 3 unanswered runs and now trail 4-3 in the fifth.

2:13PM - After a Keaton Baker walk, Craft fouls out. In the inning, 2 runs on 2 hits, 2 men left on base.

2:11PM - Kolton Brewster is the man of the hour after his two run single to left. Buna cuts the lead to one, 4-3 Mildred leads.

2:09PM - Clark strikes out swinging. Carrell then steals second base. Runners on second and third with two outs.

2:07PM - Single to right field. Runners are now on the corners with one out for the Coogs. Kyle Clark up at the plate.

2:00PM - An error by the first baseman starts Buna's bottom half of the fourth inning, and a sac bunt advances the runner to second. Looks like Buna is just trying to get each run back one by one. 

1:59PM - Sheppard throws out a Mildred runner trying to steal second base to end the inning. Baxter, Clark, and Carrell are due up.

1:56PM - Great diving catch by Blanton Craft, two outs in the top of the fourth.

1:53PM - Sheppard strikes out to end the inning. 1 Run on 2 hits, and 2 left on base for the Coogs in the bottom of the third.

1:48PM - Craft singles to center, two on and one out for Hillin. He grounds one and the force out is made at third. Same situation but with two outs now.

1:46PM - Error on the Mildred second baseman, Brewster scores, it's now 4-1 Mildred and the Coogs have one runner on and the top of the order up at the plate.

1:43PM - Brewster tries to jump start the offense, hits a 375ft foul ball. still batting. Don't throw that pitch again, right...not this time. Kolton hits a ground rule double. He's on second base with one out.

QUICK STAT - Brandon Hillin's pitching line: 3IP, 1K, 1BB, 4R, 0 Earned, 5H.

1:36PM - Leadoff single for Mildred. Next batter hits a double play ball and the first baseman drops it for the Coogs. Buna makes up for the mistake by turning a successful 6-4-3 double play. Let's see if this ignites the bats.

1:34PM - Buna goes down again 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second inning.

1:24PM - Another error in the inning, this time by the shortstop. A routine play resulted in a bad throw to first and where the tag on the runner was missed. 4th run of the inning comes into the game for Mildred. Inning over, 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 errors.

1:22PM - Mildred steals a base, next batter hits a sacrifice fly, it's now 3-0 Mildred.

1:20PM - Ground hit to 2nd Base goes through Kyle Clark's legs. Error on the play and two runs score. Mildred up 2-0.

1:18PM - Mildred now has the bases loaded.

1:15PM - Mildred leads off their second inning in a row with a single to left field. The second batter also singles. Both runners are advanced on a bunt. Second and Third, with one out.

1:09PM - Buna is retired 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the first.

1:06PM - Hillin strikes out the clean up spot looking. The Coogs will have Craft, Hillin, and Sheppard up in the bottom half.

1:02PM - Mildred leads off with a single to right field. The two spot sarifices the runner over to second base. The third batter tapped a ball back to the mound and Hillin pickles the runner into the second out of the inning.

1:00PM - The first pitch of the game was a strike from Hillin if anyone believe in superstitions.

12:58PM - Good following for Cougars. Partly cloudy day, winds are blowing out to straight center field. 

12:50PM - Its 13 minutes to game time and starting picher Branon Hillin is warming up for Buna. The Cougars are on a 20 game winning streak against teams in Class 2A.

Earlier today, Salado clinched their state title game berth by defeating San Angelo Grape Creek 11-0.
