Lady Cards fall to third place in SLC after loss to Oral Roberts
BEAUMONT, Texas – Senior Day didn’t go quite as planned for the Lamar University Lady Cardinals as they dropped a 62-55 decision to visiting Oral Roberts in a Southland Conference game on Saturday. Senior Kalis Loyd, playing in her final regular-season home game for Lamar, led all scorers with 24 points, but it wasn’t enough for the Lady Cardinals (19-8 overall, 11-5 Southland), who fell into third place in the conference with two games remaining. “We just didn’t get it done today,” lamented Lamar coach Larry Tidwell after the game. “We had our chances, but we couldn’t get the shots to fall.” Lamar shot a season-low 24.6 percent (14-of-57) from the field, while Oral Roberts (15-12, 12-5) shot 42 percent (21-of-50). The Golden Eagles were especially deadly from 3-point range, connecting on 62.5 percent of their shots 10-of-16). “Give Oral Roberts credit, they have some good shooters,” Tidwell said. “I’m still very proud of this team.” The game was tight throughout with 12 lead changes. Lamar, which led 33-32 at halftime, held a 46-38 lead with 12:43 remaining in the second half after Loyd drained a trey, but the Golden Eagles scored the next 13 points to take a 51-46 lead with 7:29 remaining. The Lady Cardinals never got any closer than three points the rest of the way. “Obviously, I would have like to win this last game, but I have great memories of playing in the Montagne Center,” Loyd said. “I still believe in this team, and I believe we can win a conference championship.” Dominique Edwards added 15 points for Lamar. Alice Robinson tied her career high with a game-high 11 rebounds. Kevi Luper led Oral Roberts with 21 points, while Taylor Cooper had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Lamar is a game behind conference-leading Sam Houston State, which is 12-4 in the Southland, and a half-game back of Oral Roberts. Lamar and Sam Houston Stte have two games remaining, while Oral Roberts has one. Lamar closes out the regular season with a pair of road games. The Lady Cardinals are at Nicholls at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and at Southeastern Louisiana at 2 p.m. March 9. Lamar has already clinched a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament set for March 13-16 in Katy, Texas.
