LU women's basketball team falls in season opener
STILLWATER, Okla. – Dominique Edwards poured in a
career-high 24 points, but the Lamar University women’s basketball team dropped
an 83-56 decision to No. 21 Oklahoma State in the season opener for both teams
Edwards also led Lamar with seven rebounds, while Shauna
Long added 12 points, but Oklahoma State pulled away thanks to having four
players score in double figures.
“I felt confident,” Edwards said. I wasn’t nervous at all. I
think we played well and sent a message to the Southland Conference that we
want to win it this year.”
Brittney Martin led the Cowgirls with 18 points and eight
rebounds. All-American candidate Tiffany Bias had 14 points, seven assists and
seven steals, while Kendra Suttles and Liz Donahoe finished with 10 points
Lamar hung tough early, grabbing a 7-6 lead on a Kiandra
Bowers jumper with 14:32 remaining. The Lady Cardinals were down 14-11 with
12:08 remaining in the half before the Cowgirls broke things open with an 11-0
run. Lamar would never get any closer than 12 points after that.
“I thought we hung with them,” Lamar coach Robin Harmony
said. “We missed too many free throws (13-of-24) and too many turnovers (24).
Those are things we can correct. I was a lot of good things today.”
JaMeisha Edwards had eight points for Lamar, matching her
career best, while Bowers had six points in her collegiate debut.
Lamar struggled from the field, hitting just 34 percent of
its shots (17-of-50). Oklahoma State held a 43-33 edge on the boards.
With the win, Oklahoma State improved to 6-0 all-time
“This is the best team we will play all season,” Harmony
said. “Playing teams like this will definitely get us ready for conference.”
Lamar opens the home portion of its schedule at 7 p.m.
Monday when it entertains Our Lady of the Lake. For ticket information, call
