Lady Cards get third straight SLC win
BEAUMONT, Texas – Kalis Loyd’s third straight 20-point game powered the Lamar Lady Cardinals to a 58-49 win over visiting Southeastern Louisiana in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game Monday evening.
Loyd had 22 points for Lamar (10-3 overall, 3-0 Southland), which started conference play with a 3-0 mark for the first time since the 2009-10 season. Loyd boosted her career total to 1,671 points, just 59 points shy of Uirannah Jackson’s school record of 1,730 points.
“I don’t worry about how many points I score, as long as we get the win,” Loyd said. The senior from Malmoe, Sweden, certainly has done her job in getting points, as she has been Lamar’s leading scorer in all 13 games this season.
The Lady Cardinals struggled offensively for most of the contest, but used a stifling defense to shut down the Lady Lions (7-7, 0-3). Southeastern Louisiana was just 21-of-60 (35 percent) from the field, including 0-of-9 from 3-point range. Lamar also forced the Lady Lions to commit 32 turnovers.
“Defense is the strength of our team,” said forward Dominique Edwards, who had 10 points and seven rebounds for Lamar. “We take a lot of pride in our defense.”
Lamar was just 24-of-65 (36.9 percent) from the floor, and hit a season-low one 3-pointer while going 1-of-19 (5.3 percent) from beyond the arc.
“I think our fatigue showed tonight,” Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. “This was our third game in five days. We’re a better 3-point team than what we showed tonight.”
Alice Robinson had seven points and a game-high nine rebounds for Lamar. Gia Ayers added five points and a game-high five assists in the win. Brandi Simmons had 14 points, while Aja Gibson added 11 for the Lady Lions.
Lamar returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday when it hosts Sam Houston State in the first half of a hoops doubleheader. The Lamar men play Sam Houston State in the 7:30 p.m. nightcap. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715, or visit http://www.lamarcardinals.com/tickets/whoops-tickets.html.
