Lady Cards suffer first conference loss
Loyd finished with game highs of 20 points, six assists and four steals, but Lamar (10-4 overall, 3-1 Southland) suffered its third loss of the season after leading at halftime.
“We just didn’t shoot the ball well in the second half,” Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. “Give Sam Houston credit. They made some big shots when they needed to. We had our chances, but just couldn’t score.”
The Lady Cardinals went scoreless over the final 4:32 of the game after Carenn Baylor’s layup pulled Lamar into a 57-57 tie. The Lady Cardinals missed their final seven shots of the game. Sam Houston State (7-8, 3-0) took the lead for good when Sequeena Thomas scored from inside the paint with 2:25 remaining.
Lamar had one final chance to win it, but Dominique Edwards’ 3-pointer in the dying seconds was blocked by Thomas.
Lamar led 34-29 at halftime after hitting on 45.5 percent of its shots (15-of-33). However, the Lady Cardinals were just 8-of-26 (23.1 percent) after intermission.
Baylor finished with 14 points for Lamar. Thomas had a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds for Sam Houston State. Chanice Smith also had 16 points in the win, while Britni Martin had 10 points.
Loyd boosted her career total to 1,691 points, just 39 points shy of Uirannah Jackson’s school record of 1,730 points. Her six rebounds gave her 721 for her career, pushing her past Brittney Williams for fifth place on Lamar’s all-time list.
Lamar returns to action at 4 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a Southland Conference game. That contest is the opening game of a doubleheader with the Lamar men’s team, which hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6 p.m.
“I saw a lot of good things tonight,” Tidwell said. “I still feel very good about this team. We just have to bounce back.”
