Federal court delays BISD election

Beaumont school district attorney Melody Chappell says a federal court is delaying the May 11 school board election until November.

Chappell and attorneys for candidates who want the election to go forward argued their positions Tuesday before a circuit court in Washington, D.C.

The district says the election should not take place until November to give the Justice Department time to pre-clear a new map with changes in the boundaries for the seven trustee positions.

Attorney Michael Getz told KFDM News by phone that the election could take place sooner than November but will not take place May 11.

Getz believes all seven seats should be up for election and three incumbents who didn't file shouldn't be allowed to do so later. Those were the rulings from the 9th Court of Appeals in Beaumont. The district disagrees and says the filing period should reopen, allowing the three incumbents to run for re-election.
