Massive fertilizer plant explosion near Waco
WEST - An explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, near Waco, has leveled a wide area of the town and injured a number of people, according to first responders, and rocked homes up to 15 miles away.
The explosion at West Fertilizer in the town of West was reported shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Smoke can be seen billowing above the plant.
In addition, numerous injuries were reported along with several buildings destroyed. Witnesses say the explosion caused damage to a nursing home.
According to some reports, people may be trapped in the nursing home and in an apartment building.
Spokesperson Gayle Scarbrough for the Department of Public Safety said troopers brought some of the victims to hospitals in patrol cars.
The explosion also caused a power outage to a wide area of the community.
Tonya Harris of Groesbeck said she heard the explosion. "My husband and l were cleaning up the kitchen after supper," she wrote in an email, "and heard what we thought was someone running into our house. It shook our windows and doors. We immediately ran outside looking for the worst."
