If Willie Nelson or Dan Rather calls or visits you on a regular basis, you are a very important person in Texas. Mattie Dellinger was just that. Dellinger was the undisputed authority on everything Shelby County, and especially in Center where she knew everything, everyone, and everything about everyone.
Dellinger, 101, died Tuesday morning at her home after a lengthy illness.
The legend of her incredible spitfire personality was enormous; she famously turned down requests to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, as well as Late Night with David Letterman, simply because she didn’t want to fly in an airplane to get there.
Although some of her biggest fans were her personal friends Willie Nelson and Dan Rather, her devoted fan base was the people of Shelby County who listened religiously to her radio program “Mattie’s Party Line” on KDET and KLCR. The name of the radio show was also the title of her weekly column which ran for more than forty years in the local paper.
Dellinger was no stranger to the news business; she was a stringer for the Houston Chronicle, the Houston Post, the Beaumont Enterprise, the Shreveport Times, and the Associated Press.
Dellinger's funeral service will be held on Saturday morning at First Baptist Church in Center, which she often quipped is “The Center of the universe”.
