Former teacher accused of sex with student runs from tv crew

HOUSTON - by Drew Karedes/KHOU 11 News and

The former Alief ISD teacher accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl didn’t have much to say when confronted by a KHOU News crew outside of the Harris County Jail.

Kelly Ann Garcia, 29, posted a $60,000 bond late Thursday.

As she walked out of jail, KHOU 11 News Reporter Drew Karedes asked, “Is there anything you want to say to the parents who trusted you?”

Garcia started running and broke into a sprint.

She didn’t have anything to say until she was cornered several blocks away.

“Just leave me alone,” said Garcia.

Garcia then sprinted off into the distance in downtown Houston.

That leaves no explanation for the mother of the 16-year-old girl involved in a series of alleged graphic sexual encounters.

“She seemed nice at the time. She said she wanted to mentor my daughter, and I took her for her word. Now I’m just not as trusting in people,” said the 16-year-old’s mother.

KHOU is not identifying the teen’s mother to protect her daughter’s identity.

She said she and her husband had no idea of what had been occurring since spring break until he caught the two at a public park.

“He was outraged and disappointed and called 911,” she explained.

Police said her daughter was not even in Garcia’s classroom at Hastings High School. According to documents, the two met through a mutual friend and began to get close.

Investigators allege Garcia would stay with the 16-year-old after school while the teenager was working on a classroom project.

The relationship reportedly crossed the line on March 21st at Starbucks. That’s when documents say Garcia told the teen she had a romantic dream about her.

The 16-year-old’s mother believes her daughter was taken advantage of and still doesn’t know it.

“She just barely turned 16. At that age, you don’t know what you’re doing, what you’re getting yourself into,” added the mother.

Police say Garcia took the girl to her apartment on numerous occasions.

Most of the details in documents are too graphic for television. A prosecutor explained one of the alleged encounters.

“The allegation is that they did, in fact, drive to a store and purchase a sex toy and drove back to the defendant’s apartment where they engaged in sex,” said prosecutor Markay Stroud.

Garcia is charged with indecency with a child and sexual assault of a child. She has been ordered to stay away from the 16-year-old girl.
