Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday

KFDM News - Postal carriers pick up and drop off mail to homes across the country on a daily basis.

One day a year, the workers carry something else in an effort to help feed hunger Americans.

Today, the U.S. Postal Service, the Southeast Texas Food Bank and several other groups kicked off  this year's Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

It's a nationwide event in which people across the country leave non-perishable food items next to their mailbox for mail carriers to pick up.

The workers later turn the food over to Southeast Texas food banks.

Dozens of people gathered at Beaumont's main post office on Walden Road Friday morning to gear up for tomorrow's drive.

The post office says it's in a unique position to help fight hunger because mail carriers can pick up food as they go door to door delivering mail.

Saturday, May 11th marks 21st Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive event.

It's the nation's largest single-day food drive.

People have donated more than 'one billion' pounds of food since the program began.

You can leave non-perishable items by your mailbox and carriers will pick them up on Saturday.
