Coast Guard ends search for missing teen

HOUSTON — The Coast Guard has suspended their search for a man reported missing while swimming off the Galveston coast.
Missing is Chris Jackson, 18, of League City.

Another man who was swimming with Jackson called the Galveston Police Department at approximately 8:30 p.m., on Friday to report that Jackson hadn’t resurfaced after both men were overtaken by a large wave.

Coast Guard crew members searched for Jackson with MH-65D Dolphin helicopters from Air Station Houston and 45-foot Response Boat — Mediums from Station Freeport.

"Suspending a search is not a decision made lightly," said Elvie Damaso, Command Duty Officer with Coast Guard Sector Houston/Galveston. "Our boat and aircrews saturated the area of San Luis Pass, searching exhaustively for more than 22 hours. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Mr. Jackson at this difficult time."


GALVESTON - News Release - Coast Guard, Galveston Police Department search for missing 18 year old.

The Coast Guard, Galveston Police Department and Galveston Island Beach Patrol are searching for an 18-year-old man who was last seen swimming in San Luis Pass, off Galveston, Friday.  Chris Jackson of League City is missing.

Another man who was swimming with Jackson called the Galveston Police Department at approximately 8:30 p.m., on Friday to report that Jackson hadn’t resurfaced after both men were overtaken by a large wave.

Coast Guard crew members are currently searching aboard an MH-65D Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Houston and a 45-foot Response Boat — Medium from Station Freeport.

“Last night we launched a fresh small boat-crew from Station Freeport and they were able to stay on scene all night,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Steven Smith, a watch stander with Sector Houston/Galveston.

“This morning we were able to launch a fresh aircrew from Air Station Houston to continue the search. We’re mitigating the fatigue limits of all of our resources, which allows us to continue searching for longer periods of time.”
