Less flooding for South Park?
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
Beaumont City Councilmembers approved a plan to improve the South Park area water supply and sanitary sewer system.
Patrick Donart with the Public Works Department says the plan will help reduce the amount of flooding those neighborhoods receive.
“We're creating basically an alternative way for water to be carried out or transferred out of those areas and into an outfall,” Donart said.
The other project involves making sure the pipes in the ground are working properly.
“If the water and wastewater infrastructure needs repair or rehabilitation, we implement these projects together so that after they finish the streets, we don't have to go back there and do street cuts to repair deteriorating water and wastewater piping,” said Dr. Hani Tohme, the director of the Beaumont Water Utilities Department.
The city received a grant to pay $ 11.8 million for the project. The South Park area cost 12.3 million while the sewer system costs $1.4 million.
“At the end of the day is to have a good design being built by a good contractor and create a good end product which in my mind would be no flooding for those residents,” said Donart.
Construction is expected to begin later this month. They believe it will take about two years to complete.
