Judge drops TRO; Central's salutatorian unchanged
BEAUMONT - KFDM News has learned a judge dropped a Temporary Restraining Order linked to a lawsuit claiming a BISD assistant superintendent "manipulated the academic rating of students" to affect the choice for Central Medical Magnet's salutatorian, and the student the district named salutatorian will remain in that position at Saturday's graduation.
BISD attorney Melody Chappell told KFDM News Judge Gary Sanderson dropped the TRO he granted at the request of attorney Larry Watts following a meeting in chambers Thursday afternoon and a brief session in open court.
"We made no deal," Chappell told KFDM News. "Our stance is we named the right salutatorian. The district is standing by its choice. The lawsuit is still there and we'll still fight it. The district maintains neither Assistant Superintendent Patricia Lambert nor any of the other defendants named in the lawsuit manipulated scores to determine who became salutatorian. Lambert isn't even on the campus."
Lambert had been principal at Central Medical Magnet High School before the district promoted her to the administrative position at the BISD central office.
Chappell said the lawsuit and the claims aren't fair to the student she says was rightfully named salutatorian.
The lawsuit claims the class rank of Salutatorian makes a student eligible to receive scholarships reportedly valued at more than $400,000.
KFDM contacted the district to seek a comment from Patricia Lambert. We're waiting for a response.
