New law makes it easier to carry concealed handguns in Texas
LUMBERTON-By: Leslie Rangel
A new state law took effect September 1 that cuts the number of hours to acquire a concealed handgun license.
Instead of ten hours, you'll need a mininum of four and a maximum of six.
Some critics argue the reduced hours may increase the potential risk of misusing a handgun.
Brad Bennett teaches concealed handgun classes at Lone Star Gun Range in Lumberton.
He says a cut in the number of hours to get a license, means he won't have to spend as much time teaching the course.
"It is easier to take the class, certainly a lot more convenient for people to get in," Bennett says.
Room for more students because it'll take fewer hours, four instead of ten to get a license.
"The full book is still covered, all the state laws, everything is still going to be covered it's just being reduced by moving a few of the videos that were made in the 1980's," Bennett said.
Although some say the reduced class times will make it easier to get a concealed handgun license, others are fearful it could put guns in the hands of the wrong people.
A critic says, "I think the safer we are in this country the better we are, the less knowledge you know about firearms the worse it gets, so at least have 10 hours or more."
But this instructor believes the change won't compromise safety.
"We're not cutting any shortcuts, especially on anyone's safety," Bennett said.
He welcomes the chance to teach more people the skills he's spent a lifetime developing.
