PAISD student dress controversy
By Nicole Murray
No more hoodies or cargo pants. This morning the Port Arthur school district invited parents, teachers and adminstrators to talk about those and other changes.
The interim superintendent Dr. Mark Porterie told the group he has a zero tolerance policy for bullies.
He said education is his number one priority but he feels some students are not reaching their full potential because they are being bullied.
During this morning's meeting at the administration building parents and administrators came together to talk about about the future of the district's students.
Dr. Porterie said he has an open door policy and wants the input of parents and family members, he says it takes the entire community to ensure students success.
The group agreed students need to learn respect for themselves, each other and adults to stop the bullying.
Porterie wants to implement new programs that teach the younger students about values and respect.
He also discussed the ban on cargo pants and hoodies. Porterie said cargo pants are out because it is hard to determine what's inside the pockets and when looking at surveillance video it's hard to see faces when someone is wearing a hoodie.
