Update: Bond set for men accused of stealing cigarettes
JASPER - by Steve W Stewart/KJAS & Rayburn Broadcasting CompanyTwo men accused of burglarizing a Jasper convenience store have now been officially charged. According to Detective Garrett Foster of the Jasper Police Department, the crime occurred early Thursday morning at the Shell Sunshine #15 on the northeast corner of East Gibson at Graham.
According to Foster, entry was made by busting out the glass on a door on the north side of the building. Once inside, Foster said the suspects targeted just one thing - cigarettes.
Shortly after noon on Thursday, Foster said he and other officers executed a search warrant in the Hope Village Apartments in the 700 block of Pollard Street, and once inside they recovered some of the stolen merchandise, and detained one person.
Foster later said that evidence and information gathered in the investigation led to the two male suspects, now identified as 22-year-old Jared Matthews, of Houston, and 19-year-old Dvonte Spearman, of Newton.
On Friday, Matthews and Spearman stood before Precinct 6 Justice of the Peace Steve Conner, and each was charged with burglary of a building. Their bonds were set at $7,500.00 each, and at last word both remained in the Jasper County Jail.
