New study reveals segregation continues to plague Texas schools

KFDM News - A new study shows that segregation continues to plague Texas schools.

An accountability system has been in place across the state for the past two decades, aimed at promoting equality in schools, but researchers at the University of Texas say low-skilled teachers paired with a high turnover rate in principals keep foreign-language students from performing.

They fall under what's called triple segregation: high poverty; high minority; and low performing schools.

Nearly 50 years after racial segregation in schools was outlawed, numbers from the Texas Education Agency shows little progress when it comes to Hispanic and African American segregation in schools.

Texas has the second-largest number of students enrolled in English as a second language in the country behind California.
