Newton County deputies break up theft ring that crossed state line

NEWTON COUNTY - by Steve W Stewart/KJAS & Rayburn Broadcasting Company

The Newton County Sheriff's Department says five people are in custody on both sides of the Sabine River, and numerous stolen items have been recovered after search warrants were executed in their county, and in nearby Vernon Parish late Monday evening.

According to Newton County Chief Deputy Cynthia Hall, an investigation led to the first search warrant, which was carried out at a residence on Recreational Road 255. Once inside, Hall said deputies discovered numerous items that had been stolen in both Newton and Jasper Counties, and information gathered at the scene was shared with officials in Vernon Parish.

Hall said Vernon Parish deputies obtained a search warrant and served it at a house in the Evans Community, where they found more stolen merchandise.

According to Hall, two people were arrested in Newton County, while three were arrested in Vernon Parish, however, their names have not been released, and the investigation is continuing.
