Woman who says Jasper officers beat her files a lawsuit
Attorneys have filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Jasper and several other defendants on behalf of a woman who says officers beat her when she was in custody.
Police in Jasper arrested Keyarika Diggles in May for what they said was an unpaid traffic ticket.
They brought her to jail, and surveillance video documented what happened.
Attorneys for Diggles say two officers became upset after allowing her to call her mother to ask for help in paying the ticket.
The attorneys say one officer argued with her, and they say both men slammed her head onto a counter top.
The video shows a struggle and later an officer trying to drag Diggles toward a cell. Her shoe comes off and the officer slips and falls.
According to the lawsuit, Diggles is "the most recent victim of Jasper's long-standing and now escalating racial tension."
The lawsuit says the city fired both officers in June.
The Bernsen Law Firm is asking for a jury trial, and that a jury award diggles actual and punitive damages.
