Power outage brings swim meet to early end
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
The Beaumont Independent School District attempted to host the third annual Special Olympics Swim Meet, but a power outage forced the hosts to cancel halfway through the competition.
Everything went out. There was a big [gasp] and then everybody was like what's going on and so we had to figure out what happened, said Area Director of Special Olympics Texas, Hannah Meek.
A witness at the scene of the center of the power outage said a garbage truck driver crashed into a utility pole knocking down an electric wire.
Were waiting to hear back from Entergy to see if the lights will be coming back at one, said Meek.
I'm thinking on the Lord. I'm praying for good things. It would happen right now, said Matt Bloodsworth.
I'm waiting for the lights to come back on and waiting for another swim meet again, Saad Khawaja.
Both competed earlier in the day, but Khawaja was scheduled to race again.
The lights did not come back at one and Meek was forced to cancel the rest of the meet.
Despite the early end to the meet, many of the athletes still had a great time.
Meek plans to host another swim meet for the Greater Beaumont Area in preparation for their big meet in Houston come October.
