Overnight chase; Investigators close in on murder suspect

JASPER - by Steve Stewart - Despite a large manhunt, a murder suspect managed to elude officers on Sunday morning, shortly after he was spotted at a house just east of Jasper.

According to Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman, deputies received a tip that 33 year old Gary Rene Smith, Jr., of Silsbee, was hiding out in a house on Steer Stadium Road, just north of Highway 190 East. Newman said when officers arrived shortly after 10:00, Smith took off running and disappeared into open fields and wooded areas in and around the old Tonahill Ranch, on the west side of Steer Stadium Road.

Officers at the scene said that Smith was wearing a white t-shirt, and tan shorts.

Smith, along with 22-year-old Jeffery Shane Reed, of Jasper, are accused of shooting and killing 29-year-old Jacob Thomas Auberry, of Dayton in Liberty County. The incident occurred Thursday morning on Hi Truitt Road, just north of the Jasper city limits. Deputies arrived to find Auberry unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Freddie Miller.

Reed later turned himself in, and he is being held in the Jasper County Jail on a $1 million dollar bond on the murder charge, and bond denied on a parole violation charge.
