Kountze cheerleaders still in battle to display religious banners

KFDM News - High school football in Kountze involves action on the field and in the courtroom.

Earlier this year, a state district judge ruled in favor of cheerleaders displaying banners with religious messages. The judge said they had a constitutional right to place religious messages on run-through banners at football games and other school-sponsored events.

The school district appealed. The American Civil Liberties Union filed court papers supporting the district.

The ACLU argues the banners violate the constitution.  The organization believes the banners are a form of government speech sponsored by the school and amount to government establishing a religion.

An attorney representing the cheerleaders spoke with us at today's press club meeting about the school district's decision to appeal.
