LIVE: First Beaumont tax increase in a decade

BEAUMONT-By: Leslie Rangel

It's something Beaumont homeowners haven't seen in a decade.

The city is proposing a property tax increase.

It would amount to more than seven percent.

Today council held the second public hearing on the tax increase.

Last year the property tax rate was $0.64 per $100 value.

Next year, homeowners could begin paying five cents more.

City leaders say they'd use part of the money to help repay the city's debt.

The other part would go toward improvements, including road work on Magnolia and in the Avenues.

Council offered people a chance to comment about the plan during today's meeting, but no one spoke up.

The city's chief financial officer, Laura Clark believes it shows the city is doing something right.

City leaders say they'll also use the money to move the public health office to College street.

That would create a medical district near the College and Calder area.
