85 year old woman targeted and robbed

BEAUMONT - Beaumont police believe two people targeted an 85 year old woman, followed her home and robbed her in her garage.

The woman told police she was in the driver's seat, looked in the rear-view mirror and saw one man walking up to her car. She never expected what happened next.

Police have some tips of what to do if you're put in that situation.

Beaumont police say if you're out and about assume someone may be watching you and when you travel to and from home.  Don't fully trust anyone who might approach you.   That person may be targeting you.

Officers believe two people targeted the 85 year old woman.

The woman was running errands and returned to her home on Sandwood Lane in west Beaumont  Wednesday morning at about 10:15.

She opened her garage door and pulled into her driveway.

She saw someone walking up the driveway and thought it was a lawn maintenance man who needed work.

She rolled down her car window when he was near her.

That's when the man reached through the window into her car, stole her purse and ripped her watch from her arm.

He got into a black car that was waiting and the driver sped away.

Anytime someone invades your space like that and takes something from your forcibly and hurts you in the process, Its probably one of the most traumatic things in your life, said Ofc. Doug Kibodeaux,

The attack left the woman with scratches.  She didn't go to a hospital.
Officers say the woman should have lowered her garage when she saw the man walking up the driveway. She also could have backed down the driveway to avoid him.

Police remind you: never open your door to someone you don't know.  They say do not give them the benefit of the doubt.
